THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The USA is one of the largest countries in the world. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The area of the USA is over nine million square kilometres. It is washed by the Pacific Ocean and by the Atlantic Ocean. The most northern part of the USA is Alaska, the largest state, separated from the rest of the country by Canada.
The population of the United States is nearly 250 million people, most of the people live in towns.
People of different nationalities live in the USA,
The official language of the country is English. The capital of the country is Washington. It was named in honour of the first President, George Washington.
As the USA is a large country, the climate is different in different regions. For example, the Pacific coast is a region of mild winters and warm, dry summers, but the eastern continental region is watered with rainfall. The region around the Great Lakes has changeable weather.
There are many mountains in the USA. For example, the highest peaks of the Cordillera in the USA are 6,193 and 4,418 metres.
The main river of the country is the -Mississippi. But there are many other great rivers in the USA: the Colorado in the south and the Columbia in the north west. There are five Great Lakes between the USA and Canada.
The USA produces more than 52 per cent of the world’s corn, wheat, cotton tobacco.
There are many big cities in the country. They are Washington (the capital of the country), New York (the city of contrasts, financial and business centre of the USA), Boston (there are many colleges and universities in it), Chicago (one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA), San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit (one of the biggest centres of the automobile industry).
The USA has an Academy of Sciences. There are many scientific institutions, museums, libraries, theatres and other interesting places in the country.
The USA is a highly developed industrial country. The USA is rich in mineral resources, such as aluminium, salt, zinc, coppers, and others. The country is rich in coal, natural gas, gold and silver, too. It holds one of the first places in the world for the production of coal, iron, oil, natural gas.
Such industries as machine-building, ship-building are highly developed in the country.
American agriculture produces a lot of food products: grain, fruit, vegetables.
The USA is a federal republic, consisting of fifty states. Each of these states has its own government. Congress is the American Parliament which consists of two Chambers.
The president is the head of the state and the government. He is elected for four years.

The entry to the museum is free but for several special exhibitions you need tickets.
Tower of London
The greatest Tower of London is one of the world’s most famous buildings. This building with 900-years history was previously a royal palace, execution place, prison, jewel house, arsenal and even zoo. While visiting this sight don’t forget to gaze up at the White Tower, marvel at the Crown Jewels and skulk through a medieval king’s bedchamber.
Tate Modern
Tate Modern in London is a famous Britain’s national museum of contemporary and modern art. It stands on the banks oа Thames and has a unique shape (previously it was a power station). The visitors can find the exhibitions by famous modern artists from Gauguin to Damien Hirst inside. After contemplation of works one can sit in the gallery’s restaurants and rejoice the fabulous view across the city.
Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey also known as Collegiate Church of St. Peter is a Gothic church on the scale of a cathedral. Westminster Abbey has been the traditional place of coronation and burial for English monarchs for a long time. Today it is still used for the celebration of great events in the country’s history and for regular worship.

Вестминстерское Аббатство - это один из замечательных образцов английской ранне-готической архитектуры. Оно было основано Эдуардом Исповедником в 1065 году. Официально Аббатство называется Соборной церковью Святого Петра в Вестминстере.
Оно было построено почти целиком уже в XIII веке, во времена правления короля Генриха III; часть построек относится к XVI веку. К сожалению, в XIX веке многие средневековые элементы были уничтожены в результате реставрационных работ.
Оксфорд — знаменитый во всем мире университетский городок. Он прославился благодаря прекрасной архитектуре и превосходным пейзажам. Решение основать университет было принято в 1133 году, для того чтобы священнослужители могли получать полное образование. Они арендовали жилье у коренных жителей и частенько не имели денег. Обычаи в то время были свободными, что послужило источником к неприятным последствиям. Для введения строгой дисциплины организовываются колледжи.
Трафальгарская площадь одно из самых красивых и популярных мест Англии. Находясь в центре столицы, она уже много лет манит туристов со всего мира своим неповторимым колоритом и историческими достопримечательностями. Недаром ее называют "Сердцем Англии". Изначально носившая имя короля Вильгельма четвертого, она была переименована в теперешнее название после сражения английских и франко-испанских морских сил около мыса Трафальгар в 1805г.
