London [lʌndən] is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s population is over 8 million people (2015).  London is the biggest city in western Europe, and the world’s largest financial centre.  London forms ’Greater London’, within the metropolitan zone with population of over 12 million people. It’s located in the south-east of the United Kingdom, on the banks of the River Thames, about 80 km from the North Sea.
It’s a river and sea port. London has six airports and the world’s oldest underground. There are more than 40 universities, the British Museum and one of the largest libraries in the world, British Library. London is formed by two ancient cities – City of London and City of Westminster, both cities forming the region of Greater London.  The City of London  adjoins the medieval Tower of London. In the Fire of 1666, the city was heavily damaged.
The first major settlement was founded by the Romans after their invasion of 43 AD. Firstly they had built a bridge across the Thames. Later they decided that it was an excellent place to build a port. The water was deep enough for ocean going ships but it was far enough inland to be safe from Germanic raiders. Around 50 AD Roman merchants built a town by the bridge called Londinium.  This is the way London was born.
For a long time, London was a small city. All its people lived inside the walls that were built by the Romans. This area is still called the City of London. There were many villages around the city. Gradually, more people came to live there. Then, step by step, the villages joined together into one huge city.
Another famous old part of Greater London is Westminster founded as the state residence in XI. Westminster Abbey (a cathedral), The Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament, with Big Ben), and 10 Downing Street (where the Prime Minister lives) are located there.
In the XI-XII centuries London became the capital of England. At the beginning of XVIII century it became the capital of the United Kingdom and the largest city in Europe. From 1825 to 1925 it was the largest city in the world. Since XVI to XX century it was the capital of the British Empire.
