Небольшой текст на английском языке, на тему: *Почему я люблю рождество*.

Christmas is the holiday of my soul. It is cold outside, and the sky is gloomy, but the flowers burst into bloom deep in my heart. Christmas is the victory of good over evil. All sins disappear on this day like rats, hiding in the deepest holes. They can’t bare that light, that love which is given to us on the day of Christmas. People go home loaded down with toys and Christmas presents, which will be hidden under the Christmas tree or in the knitted stockings. The tables are set. Christmas goose, potatoes, salads, cakes. There is a delicious smell in every house! People sit down at the tables, and grace is said. Candles flare up on the Christmas tree, and people wish happiness to each other. Christmas is he time to forget all the offenses you had to bear, and to forgive everyonewho hurt you and was unfair to you, who was not kind to you. To forgive and to forget. It is not very easy. But you should try. Just do it. That’s what Christ did. He died on the cross to save us. He forgave our sins. Why shouldn’t we try to forgive? But if you say, “I can forgive, but I cannot forget,” it is only another way of saying, “I will not forgive.” To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover the prisoner was you. Every person should have a special cemetery lot in which to bury the faults of friends and loved ones. This is the main meaning of the spirit of Christmas. I wish you to get to know it, and live with this spirit not only at Christmas time, but all during the year. God bless us, everyone!

Holiday/Christmas Shopping for Food

To begin my story about Christmas shopping I would like to say that there are a lot of pleasant things we connect with the idea of Christmas holidays. Shopping is the most favorable of all. Going shopping before Christmas is an exciting and a spectacular thing to do.

A lot of toys, gifts, downy and beautiful Christmas trees are sold in shops. Toys seem to lie on the racks and scream: Buy me! Buy me! Of course you buy them, because you know that they are good presents both for children and adults. Many people like to go shopping before Holiday or Christmas day as well as me, because first of all it is a pleasure and a good pastime. All shops choke up with gifts, food and people who buy up all this stuff. Huge queues fill the shops. Cashiers do not have time to count the goods, shop assistants do not have time to fill again the empty racks. People buy up everything they see on their way. Checkout counters are filled up with money; people leave shops with great bags of food and presents feeling great pleasure from shopping. Shops are decorated with Christmas stuff and shop assistants are also dressed in Christmas clothes. Also shops give holiday discounts on food and gifts.

Traditionally holidays and Christmas are especially associated with good food in people’s minds. Before a holiday shopping centers, food markets are crowded with people hunting for all kinds of products like meat products, vegetables, fruit, dairy food, sweets, sea products, beverages, etc. Everybody wants to cook something special for his family and guests and treat them delicious dishes at festive table. In different countries people have different kinds of holiday cuisine. To cook what you would like you need to buy everything beforehand and not to forget anything. Of course it takes a lot of time and effort but it is worth it. Different people have different food preferences in cooking for Christmas. Russian people prefer to have a big table with a lot of various dishes. They enjoy eating a duck or a goose stuffed with apples. The Spaniards prefer to eat fried lamb or pork. Frenchmen like to eat a turkey in white wine on Christmas day. The Italian people prefer to eat cod or bass with wine. Everybody has his preferences in the choice of food.

As for me I like to go shopping in general, as it is. I enjoy doing the shopping. I go shopping not only on weekends but also on weekdays. And I certainly like to go shopping before Christmas Day or before any holiday, like millions of other people in our country. Myfamily stock up food in big shops, like Super Good supermarket. We can buy a lot of different kinds of products at a time there. Those kinds of shopping places offer the buyers a big variety of foodstuff and people do not need to go from one shop to another searching for what they need. We buy all we want and leave the shop with bags full of food. My mother spends a very long time on shopping and choosing products. If we forget something we can buy it in a small shop near our apartment building. I like to buy food, I like to choose and ask shop assistants for advice.

Summing up what I have just said I would like to add only one thing - no matter how many times we have already had Christmas and other holidays - we always look forward to the next ones with happiness and good spirit - more new exciting shopping and interesting buys!

Every country has its own customs and traditions. And one of the strongest traditions for Christians is Christmas. The Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on the 7th of January and Catholics celebrate it on the 25th of December. English-speaking people love the tradition of celebrating Christmas (or X-mas). The word "Christmas" comes from the words "Christ’s Mass" that is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This holiday means the beginning of the New Year and the new life. It is great to walk in the city streets before Christmas. Everywhere you can see slogans "A Merry Christmasand a Happy New Year". Christmas Day is the greatest holiday. It is interesting to visit the shops before this holiday. There are a lot of nice Christmas cards and presents there. People like this holiday very much and prepare for it beforehand. They buy presents for each other, try to send Christmas cards for their relatives and friends. In early days Romans gave good luck presents to their friends such as fruit, pastry or gold on New Year’s Day. So the tradition of giving presents comes from those times. For many years in Britain the day to give presents was December 26th and not Christmas Day as it is today. Now we know December 26th as Boxing Day because in the Middle Ages that was the day when the priests opened alms boxes and gave to the poor. Now children hang socks, called Christmas stockings, at the end of their beds and wait for Santa Claus to come down the chimney to bring them presents. The tradition of giving Christmas cards is not of Christian origin. Various people have claimed to be the inventor of the first Christmas card. William Egley is most likely to be that man. In 1842 he designed his own Christmas card and sent it to one hundred friends of his. Today three billion Christmas cards are sent annually in the United States alone. English and American people celebrate this holiday with the evergreen tree — Christmas tree. In fact, America adopted the Christmas tree as a tradition earlier than England (in England in was done during Queen Victoria’s reign). Now every year on Christmas British people are sent a huge fir tree from Norway which stands in Trafalgar Square, in the centre of London, shining brightly with all its beautiful lights for people who gather on Christmas Eve. A Christmas tree stands in everybody’s living room at Christmas, giving joy and happiness to everybody. There is usually a silver star surrounded by tiny lights on the very top of the tree. Silver bells, tinsel and sparkling lights hang on the branches. Around the base of the tree there are usually the gifts and toys wrapped up in colourful paper. In early pre-Christian times evergreens (trees that stay green all the year round) were seen in Northern Europe as symbols of eternal life. Mistletoe, usually hung up as a Christmas decoration has been a symbol of love and reconciliation. Holly is a well-known Christmas decoration today in America. The legend says that Christ wore a crown of holly thorns before his death. The traditional dinner on Christmas is a turkey and a pudding.

Every country has its own customs and traditions. English people are proud of their traditions and they keep them up. It is difficult to speak about England without speaking about its holidays. Christmas Day is among them.

Christmas and New Year are the most wonderful and amazing holidays  when all dreams come true. Our school always arranges  the celebration of these holidays. In the middle of our gym they put a huge Christmas tree and performances start. The heroes of our favorite fairy-tales come to see us and give us New Year and Christmas presents, and for high school students they arrange a real costume party. Very often during the Christmas holidays our school organizes some excursions and trips. Last year we went to Moscow. It was fun. I dream to visit the most wonderful country in the world. It called Lapland. It is very beautiful, because the sun shines on the snow, and everything sparkles. I want to ride a fabulous reindeer and meet real Santa Claus. I think it would be cool!
