Австралия держит мировой рекорд по вымираниям млекопитающих.  Мы потеряли 20 видов в последние 200 лет, почти половины общемирового показателя в то время.  Но грядущая экологическая трагедия в Тасмании может означать этот мрачный рекорд собирается получить хуже.

Australia holds the world record for mammal extinctions. We have lost 20 species in the last 200 years, almost half the global total in that time. But an impending ecological tragedy in Tasmania could mean this dismal record is about to get worse.

Mammal extinctions on the mainland were caused primarily by the red fox and feral cat. Foxes never became established in Tasmania, and although Tasmania has feral cats they seem to have had little impact. Aside from the extinction of the thylacine (the “Tasmanian tiger”), Tasmania has kept a healthy mammal fauna.

The fox now has a foothold in Tasmania, thanks to a recent series of accidental introductions and possibly malicious releases. Tasmanian wildlife and agricultural authorities are striving mightily to suppress this small population before it explodes and wrecks their island’s biodiversity and damages farming

Australia is situated on the island continent. It also occupies the Island of Tasmania and some minor islands round the coast of the continent. Its area is about 8 million km2. It is the only state in the world that occupies the territory of a whole continent. Almost one half of Australian territory is occupied by deserts and semideserts. The capital of Australia is Canberra. The official language of Australia is English, because from 1787 to 1867 Australia was a place where criminals were sent from Britain. 
Australia is one of the most unusual and exotic countries of the world. A significant feature of modern Australian society is the representation of a lot of cultures drawn from many lands by its people. 

Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent. It is the sixth large country and the smallest continent. Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 11 000 km southwest of North America and about 8200 km southeast of mainland Asia. The name of the country comes from Latin word «australis» which mean southern. The country’s official name is Commonwealth of Australia.

As for the nature, the commonest trees of Australia are the eucalyptus and the Australian acacia or mimosa, the national emblem of the country. Such unusual animals as a kangaroo or a koala-bear originate from Australia. Australia is one of the most unusual and exotic countries of the world. Australia is one of the biggest countries in the world. Besides, it’s the only country, which is also a continent. For many other world countries Australia is a remote land to visit, nevertheless, millions of people gladly fly there to see its places of interest. The capital of Australia is Canberra. It’s not as large as Sydney or Melbourne, but it has an important political meaning for the country. All the governmental and parliamentary buildings are situated there. Canberra is also the home of many cultural institutions, such as Australian National University, National Gallery, National Museum, Royal Military College, Australian Institute of Sport and many others. The largest and the most visited city in Australia is Sydney. With the population over 4.6 million people, the city hosts 2.7 million international tourists a year. There is a great number of attractions in Sydney. The most well-known ones are Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Royal Botanical Gardens, Luna Park, Australian Museum of Natural History and Anthropology, Museum of Contemporary Art and several others. Another large city in Australia is Melbourne. The main sights of the city are the Federation Square, Fawkner Park, Queen Victoria Market, Royal Exhibition Building, Albert Park Lake and many other places. Particularly interesting are the natural attractions of Australia. For example, the country has some species of animals, which can’t be found anywhere else. Among them, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, flightless emus, wombats and many others. So, the Australian Zoo, which is situated in a small town Beerwah, not far from Brisbane, can be another place of interest.
