Ivan Kupala (Ivanov’s Night, Ivanov’s Day) is one of the main holidays of the calendar of the Slavs, coinciding with the Nativity of John the Baptist. After the transition to a new style of the holiday falls on July 7, more precisely, the night of July 7. In the Eastern and Western traditions, the saint was endowed with such epithets as light, a torch preceding the Sun, correlated with the image of Jesus Christ.
Within the framework of the national calendar Ivan Kupala formed a single festive cycle together with Agrafena Kupalnitsa’s days (July 6) and the holy apostles Peter and Paul (Petrov day, July 12).
Kupala holidays were celebrated in the time of paganism in honor of the Sun God, whose wife was a luminous Charge, Dawn-lightning, a red girl.

В конце декабря улицы, парки, площади одеваются в праздничный наряд. Через площади и улицы протянулись гирлянды разноцветных фонариков. Все готовятся к встречи Нового года! Это мой любимый праздник.
Но больше всего мне нравится встречать Новый год дома. Я сама наряжаю ёлку, вешаю на неё игрушки, гирлянды. У нас много разных игрушек - новых и старых. И с каждой связана своя история. I am sure that all of us look forward to this time because it’s a great chance not to get up early and to do what we want. As for me I always sleep till 9 a. m. during my winter holidays. Then I turn on my TV and lie in my bed for another hour. Winter holidays are even more exciting because we celebrate New Year and Christmas. Our mood is joyful. The whole atmosphere is full of magic. People exchange presents, decorate their homes, cook delicious food, visit each other and have parties. If the weather is cold I prefer to stay at home or visit my friends. They can also come to my place. We play computer games, surf the Internet or watch TV. The programmes on TV are really interesting during our holidays, so we watch plenty of cool films. In warm weather we go to the cinema or a café, play ice-hockey or go skiing to the park. Hockey and skiing are my hobbies. We can even play snowballs and make funny snowmen. In the evening my mother often asks me to help her about the house. My duty is washing up, watering plants and taking the rubbish out. As I don’t have to get up early during my holidays my parents allow me to watch TV and read books till midnight. I enjoy my winter holidays. Since that day the British celebrate the 5th of November. They burn a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, in a bonfire and let off fireworks. This dummy is called a "guy" (like Guy Fawkes). As for me, winter is the season I like the least. In my region winter starts usually in October and ends in April. So it is almost half a year of winter. During my this winter school vacation it was very cold and the snow never melted. The kids who live nearby were enjoying playing snowballs and skating. My parents went in the countryside for several days, they were skiing there. And I stayed all my winter vacations at home. I spent all my free days under the blanket, reading and waiting for summer to come!
I like holidays, especially winter holidays. All children like New Year and Christmas and I’m not an exemption. My winter holidays were very saturated, exciting and fun. I decorated the Christmas tree with my family, buying gifts and helped my mum to prepare salads to New Year’s table. Also after this feast I was walking a lot, have fun with my friends and of course I was doing my homework. On Christmas I went caroling and got many sweets and money. The weather was soft and I often went to the rink with my family and friends. My winter vocation gave me much pleasure, I rest and gather strength for the next term.
