Слово «амазонка» человечеству известно с античных времён. Так называли женщин-воительниц, живших на черноморском побережье в глубокой древности. Они были чрезвычайно выносливы, искусны и бесстрашны в бою. Об их отваге и храбрости слагали легенды, а мужчины-воины, пытавшиеся покорить этих бестий, позорно бежали с поля брани, бросая оружие, коней, обозы и радуясь только тому, что остались живы.
В наши дни великая река считается и самой длинной, хотя ещё совсем недавно первое место по этому параметру занимал Нил. Он протянулся по африканскому континенту почти на 6700 км. Казалось, никто не может переплюнуть такое расстояние. Река Амазонка занимала, хоть и почётное, но второе место. Её длина была 6400 км. Бралась она от группы озёр, расположенных на высоте 5700 метров над уровнем моря в перуанских Андах. С этого места было совсем недалеко до Лимы – всего 230 км на юго-запад.
Река в Южной Америке. Образуется слиянием рек Мараньон и Укаяли. Длина от истока реки Мараньон - 6992,06 км, от истока реки Апачет - около 7000 км, от истока Укаяли свыше 7000 км. Амазонка со своим длиннейшим истоком претендует, вместе с Нилом, на статус самого длинного водотока в мире, а также является крупнейшей в мире рекой по площади бассейна и полноводности. Длина состовляет 6 992 км, а Площадь бассейна 7 180 000 км². Впадают: Мараньон, Укаяли, Мадейра, Риу-Негру, Шингу, Журуа, Солимойнс, Тефе, Путумайо, Тромбетас

For decades nuclear weapons were tested near Semipalatinsk, and the ground is contaminated with radiation there.
More than 20 years ago a pulp-and-paper factory was built on the shore of Lake Baikal. As a result of the pollution, more than 50 % of the world’s purest water has been ruined. The whole ecological system of the lake has change greatly.
