London is a large city situated in the southeastern part of England, standing on the river Thames. This city is a capital of the United Kingdom. The population of London is more than eight million people. London is considered as the largest city not only of the United Kingdom but also in western part of Europe. London is one of the largest financial centers of the world. Romans founded this city in AD 34, they called it Londinium. This word later was shortened to what we have now – London. The capital of the United Kingdom has different names in different languages of the countries composing Great Britain — in Irish Londain, in Welsh Llundain, in Scottish Lunnainn. London was a small city for a very long time. Romans built walls muring the city and all the citizens lived inside these walls. Now this area is called the City of London. But around the city there were many little villages which population increased gradually. After some time (when the Romans left) all these villages were joined into one huge city which is known now as Greater London or just London. In twelfth century London became the capital of England. In spite of the fact today’s London has many immigrants, most people in this city are British. Immigrants came to London from different countries all over the world, they brought not only their languages but also their cultures and religions. Many foreigners stay in London on business, others visit London as tourists. London offers a lot of sights to see. The most visited are the famous Sights of London which include churches, palaces and museums. London is considered as one of the most important cities of the world for finance, business and politics. The capital of Great Britain is also important for entertainment, culture, media, art and fashion.

London is a beautiful and nice city. In London, living Englishmen they are kind and they speak English. In London you can meet a lot of. Beautiful people, animals. Generally London is the best city I know.
The excitment as you look around you and see crowds of people from all over the world. It makes you reallly think about how one place can attract so many people; sky scraper buildings, glamourous clothes shops filling the high streer, (A girls paradise) kids in the park and cafes galore.
Many people come here in search of one thing. celebrities come here to shoot a movie which is pretty cool walking about exploring the exciting things that surround you, and you come across someone that you have watched in a movie or on television and the fact that you have been to the place that they once stood. Makes you feel fabulous as if you are a celebrity yourself.
When I was walking from the hotel to the underground with my mother and sister, I thought we were completley lost but my mother reassured me that she knew were we where. However half an hour later my mum realised that we were in fact lost! Although I was scared my mum stayed calm and went and purchased a map and we were soon realised that we had taken a wrong turn. When we finally arrived at the underground there was a tube about to leave we rushed through the crowds of people. felt as if there was millions of them, we ran to the tube and a kind elderly man opened the doors just before the tube was about to leave we got on the tube to see every one staring at us and there was no where to sit you where to sit you where all cramped on small, claustrophobic and overcrowded carriage.
After a long, exhausting and uncomfortable journey we fianally arrived at are destination. Which is my favorite place the LONDON EYE! The downside was we had to wait in a queue by the length of the queue would take up most of our time in London. While standing in the queue I was shaking nervously as I watched ahead and seen the security guards searching people. when it came to my whole stomach turned even though I had nothing to hide but I felt so guilty as if I have done something wrong even though I knew I had not done anything wrong. A sense of relief came over me when i realise I was all clear and one step closer to being on one of the most famous places in the United Kingdom.
As I was over a hundred feet high looking down over the whole of London at the tiny people below. Although mum was to frightened to get up from the seat my sister and I went to the window to admire the amazing view. After a few times of taking pictures of the lovely surroundings, we tried to spot various buildings such as the Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and 10 downing street, which we later visited, which we later visited, which took a lot of time and energy running from train to train and bus to bus.
When we fianlly returned to the hotel even though we were exhausted from are days experience my sister and I decide to stay up late and look through all the pictures that we had taken of the sites that we had seen earlier our favorite sweets.
London is my favorite place because I got to see the amazing sites and got to experience all this while spending time with my family.
THE END. or something like that.

I wish I were in London now. If I were there I would organize an excursion and would give you a good idea about this wonderful city. As we know, London is the capital of Great Britain and one of the largest industrial and cultural centers in Europe. I suppose you will share the opinion that in this historic city modern rules shoulders with the old, the present arises from the past, the great and the small live side by side in mutual tolerance and respect and in every part of its noisy and complex life there is to be found a great affection for old traditions and history. I don’t know if you have had a possibility to visit this exciting city but I insist that you should do it. And I will give a piece of advice how to plan your tour of the city. The best starting point for all the excursions is well known Trafalgar square with Nelson’s Column in the center. The square was named to commemorate the victory of British vice-admiral Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and the Column is surmounted with his statue. I have managed to see this monument and it has made a great impression on me. Then I recommend you to see the Houses of Parliament on the north bank of the river Thames. It also has another name – the Palace of Westminster - as in the past here lived kings and queens. This ensemble is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture: the buildings seem to be directed high into the air and of course are worth seeing. And here you will find the famous Clock Tower, called “Big Ben”. The next stop is Westminster Abbey. It is a big church and a national shrine, a place, where English kings and queens are crowned and famous people are buried. It’s well known for its’ Poets’ Corner with memorials to English poets and writers who were buried here. Everybody has heard about Saint Paul’s Cathedral. It is the largest Protestant Church in England and a remarkable architectural masterpiece. It contains the unique Whispering Gallery where you can hear the whisper of the person, standing at the other end of the gallery. And at the end you should see the majestic and dreary Tower of London, which has an abundant history. It was one of the first and most impressive castles built after the Norman invasion of England in the 11th century. It has been used as a royal palace, an observatory, and arsenal and, finally, as a state prison. And now it’s a museum where you can see the Crown Jewels - the finest precious stones of the English nation and a great collection of armour. No doubt that in London there are many other sights – Tate Gallery, City, Hyde Park and others, and everyone will find a preference according to his taste. You should only remember that in this city you will get fresh impressions, take great delight in viewing monuments and discover the history of England. I think it necessary that every person should visit London!

Dear Ann,
I visited London last summer. I’m really happy. We went there with our teacher. I saw a lot of interesting places in London. First of all I saw Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the Thames and the Tower of London. Just imagine it! Then I also saw Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column and the British museum. My dream came true: I took a ride on the London Eye and soon after that I saw the Changing of the Guard near Buckingham Palace. Next week I will send you some photos of my trip to London. How did you spend your last holidays?
You were going to visit Italy, weren’t you? Did you take pictures of your trip?
Keep in touch. Best wishes.
Yours,
Varya

площадь пикадилли в лондоне Piccadilly Circus is the centre of night life in the West End. This is one of the most popular meeting points of London, probably second only to Trafalgar Square. It is actually quite small, and; most people are rather disappointed when they see it for the first time because they had imagined it would be much bigger. Piccadilly Circus is a dynamic and picturesque place with a happy and lively cosmopolitan atmosphere. There stroll people who come from the most far-flung countries in the world, of all races, dressed in their national clothes. Groups of people like to gather around the foot of the statue of Eros, the god of love, work of Sir Alfred Gilbert. They form a brightly colourful picture. Piccadilly Circus is a West End shopping centre. There are many shops with big advertisements, belonging to different foreign firms there.
Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric places in the world. This ancient circle of stones stands in Southwest England. It measures 80 meters across and is made with massive blocks of stone up to four meters high. Why it was built is a mystery.
